A shared whiteboard for teams, with everyone on the same board at the same time. Sticky notes, shapes, a pen, and text, where every stroke and move shows up for the whole room as it happens. It ships with sign-in, a database, realtime boards, a Free and Pro plan, and a polished landing page, all running on Yard.

Features

  • The tools you'd expect: sticky notes, rectangles, ellipses, lines and arrows, a freehand pen, and text, in eight colors
  • Live collaboration: notes, shapes, and moves appear for everyone instantly, and pen strokes show up while they're being drawn
  • Named cursors: see who's on the board and where they're pointing
  • Link sharing: boards are private until the owner turns on sharing. Anyone with the link joins as an editor, and turning sharing off removes them right away, even mid-session
  • Pan and zoom: scroll or pinch to zoom, hold space to pan, and zoom to fit in one click. Each board remembers where you left it
  • Select and edit: drag to select, resize with handles, nudge with the arrow keys, bring to front, and edit text in place
  • Undo and redo: rewinds your own changes, even while others are editing
  • Keyboard shortcuts: a single key for every tool (V, H, N, R, O, L, P, T), plus shortcuts for zoom, select all, and delete
  • Board list: create, rename, delete, and leave boards, with shape counts at a glance
  • Survives a dropped connection: edits made while offline are queued and sent when the connection comes back
  • Light and dark themes: follows the system setting, with a toggle that remembers your choice

Free and Pro

Chalk comes with two plans ready to sell:

Free Pro
Boards you own 3 Unlimited
People on a board at once 5 50
Shapes per board 500 5,000
Export a board as SVG No Yes

Pro is $6 a month, or 20% less paid yearly, with a 14-day trial that needs no card. Board limits follow the plan of whoever made the board, so everyone invited to a Pro board gets the bigger room. When someone hits a limit, the app explains it and points them to the upgrade.

Built on Yard

  • Yard Auth: visitors sign in with their Yard account. Chalk never handles a password, and after the first consent screen, sign-in is silent
  • Hosted service: the entire backend is a single fetch handler with no server to run or scale
  • Objects: each board is its own realtime room that holds its shapes and everyone's connection, so edits land in one order for everyone
  • Database: boards, members, and sharing settings live in the project's own SQLite database, and schema migrations apply themselves on deploy
  • Pricing: Free and Pro tiers, with each visitor's plan checked on every request

Technical details

  • Plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript: no framework, no build step, no dependencies
  • SVG canvas with its own pointer, pinch, and keyboard handling
  • Every edit is stamped with a sequence number and echoed to everyone, so two people dragging the same note end up seeing the same thing
  • Cursor updates are throttled and pen strokes are batched, which keeps usage low on busy boards
  • Every limit is enforced on the server. The app's upgrade dialogs only explain a refusal
  • One structured log line per event, readable with yard service logs, which records lengths rather than board content

Requirements

A Pro plan, for the hosted service, database, objects, and custom landing page. Yard Auth is included.
